YMMV / The Duff

Go To

  • Broken Base: It's up to debate as to which was better: The film or the book. Though, to be fair, both are very different and the film is arguably In Name Only.
  • Hollywood Homely: The entire premise hinges on the notion that Mae Whitman could pass for a "Designated Ugly Fat Friend", just because she's shorter and slightly huskier than the other leading female character, played by Bella Thorne. It's made clear that you don't have to be ugly or fat to count as such. Still, it's emphasized that she's unpopular because she's awkward and shy and has "unpopular tastes," but even then, someone as attractive as Mae Whitman easily makes Bianca’s awkwardness extremely charming and endearing, and her "strange tastes" (liking old or obscure movies) aren't really that strange or unpopular enough to warrant anyone running for the hills. A lot of her status also relies on the fact that her friends are more 'traditional' in terms of personality and beauty, and people would rather use her as a stepping stone to get to them.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: The humiliating video proclaims (voiceover and some graphics) Bianca as having a "big fat ass" and pointing out some cellulite and flab. Bianca really is petite and with a normal weight and the outfits Wes got her to try on don't reveal any spillage.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While several things that happen to Bianca do make you feel bad for her, she also does stop hanging out with her friends who don't consider her a DUFF without talking to them about it.
  • The Woobie: Bianca. All the humiliation she goes through in this movie will make you want to give her a big hug.
