* BrokenBase: It's up to debate as to which was better: The film or the book. Though, to be fair, both are very different and the film is arguably InNameOnly.

* HollywoodHomely: The entire premise hinges on the notion that Mae Whitman could pass for a "Designated Ugly Fat Friend", just because she's slightly huskier than the other leading female character, played by Creator/BellaThorne. It's made clear that you don't have to be ugly or fat to count as such. Still, it's emphasized that she's unpopular because she's awkward and shy and has "unpopular tastes," but even then, someone as attractive as Mae Whitman easily makes Bianca's awkwardness [[{{Adorkable}} extremely charming and endearing]], and her "strange tastes" (liking old or obscure movies) aren't really that strange or unpopular enough to warrant anyone running for the hills. A lot of her status also relies on the fact that her friends are more 'traditional' in terms of personality and beauty, and people would rather use her as a stepping stone to get to them.
