YMMV / Star Trek S3 E7 "Day of the Dove"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: An OOC Scotty calls Spock a "half-breed" and a "freak". Bad enough by itself, but Star Trek: Discovery would later reveal that Spock's adopted sister Michael Burnham used those same insults on little Spock in a misguided attempt to sever the emotional bond between them. It's no wonder that Spock gets so quietly pissed at Scotty, as this probably brings up some very bad memories for him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Spock and Scotty warn Kirk about the dangers of intra-ship beaming. In Star Trek (2009), Spock Prime (this Spock) reveals to Scotty that Scotty Prime eventually created a formula for interstellar beaming, which would explain how intra-ship beaming becomes commonplace by the 24th century.
    • Kang would later die fighting in a burning house.
  • Ho Yay: When Kang calls his wife Mara his science officer, there's an unsubtle cut to Kirk and his science officer Spock, before we get back on with the plot.
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Brownface is used for most if not all of the Klingons of this episode. The Klingons, who appear to be darker than any Klingons seen before, are also at the most brutal that they've been in the series to date.
    • The scene where Mara just silently stands there the whole time letting all the men talk for her is very strange to watch now.
    • Extremely downplayed at the time, Chekov's attempted rape of Mara (or strictly speaking, far more suggested than shown), even in his altered state, would tarnish the character forever if this episode was done even ten years later.
