YMMV / Somari

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Somari Mario himself transplanted into Sonic's world? Or is he a separate entity altogether?
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • The Buzz Bombers in Green Hill Zone have turned into this. Ontop of existing in far greater numbers, they will snipe at you at point-blank range with almost no warning, even off-screen!
    • The Crabmeats. They move much faster than in Sonic 1 and constantly shoot out of their claws at random intervals, with only a very brief telegraphing of their attack, and they're smaller enough that they're much harder to land a hit on. Combine this with your limited view of what's ahead, sloppy level design and wonky physics, plus the crustaceans appearing in very large quantities, and taking it slow is the only way to avoid bumping into them.
  • Fridge Brilliance: In the ending, Robotnik claims that he "will be back", which is technically true given that he reprises his role in most of the hacks.
  • Obvious Beta: Let's run through the basics... There are a lot of game breaking bugs in this port. Some of the environments in the first act, where the titular character can end up trapped in a spike pit with no escape, forcing him to die. The physics and controls are clearly not there. For instance, it's very well possible for Somari to jump and miss a platform or hit an enemy at the wrong time.
  • Porting Disaster: While Hummer Team did a pretty impressive job on bringing Sonic's gameplay into 8-bit, the controls are much stiffer than the original game, the level designs are sloppier, and the game is overall far more difficult, which all combines to make the game much less playable than the game it's based on.
  • So Bad, It's Good: It's a very wonky 8 bit port of Sega's flagship game with hair-pulling difficulty tweaks, but it's worth playing at least once for sheer novelty value.
  • That One Boss: Final Zone. Robotnik's crushers move much faster here, which can not only blindside you, but makes it so that you can't telegraph which crusher you can attack him in, basically turning the fight into a Luck-Based Mission where you just have to hope he appears in a spot you can hit him in. And if that wasn't bad enough, the electric sparks he shoots out can now change direction if you move past them, making them extremely hard to dodge. The fact that the stage still has no rings does not help.
  • That One Level: Labyrinth Zone. Water hampers your movement speed even more than in Sonic 1, which, combined with the rough controls already present in the game, make this zone a nightmare.
