• Cult Classic: A modest hit upon release, it wound up Vindicated by Video, and the cast and crew are pleased and often surprised with the fan reaction.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Romy being sexually harassed by her work colleague is very uncomfortable to watch after the Harvey Weinstein scandal, especially as Mira Sorvino has said that it was extremely hard to find work after this movie because she was blackballed by Miramax as being "too difficult" to work with.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: The HBO documentary The Inventor, about a blonde low-voiced entrepreneur in black who turns out be quite the faker, made a few people claim Elizabeth Holmes was ripping off Romy big time. There were even requests for Mira Sorvino to play Holmes, which she approves.
• Hollywood Pudgy: Romy's alleged chubbiness as a teenager which is jarring because their dorky classmate Toby is played by the genuinely plus-sized Camryn Manheim and no one, not even the Alpha Bitch, make comments about her size.
• Les Yay:
  Romy: Swear to God, sometimes I wish I was a lesbian.
  Michele: Do you want to try to have sex sometime just to see if we are?
  Romy: What? Yeah, right, Michele. Just the idea of having sex with another woman creeps me out. But if we're not married by the time we're 30, ask me again.
  Michele: Okay.
  • Not to mention they are Heterosexual Life-Partners joined at the hip who have been living together since high school for ten years, have no dating life to speak of, danced with each other at prom, and enjoy each other's company so much that they can have fun in any situation because they like each other that much.
• Unintentional Period Piece: Thanks to the advance of the internet and smartphones since the film's release, Romy and Michele would be found out within minutes by a simple Google search.
