YMMV / Prelude to Axanar

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • The entire debacle that caused fan productions to be Screwed by the Lawyers. The most angry and vocal have constantly called out CBS and Paramount for being "threatened" by the project, especially with both Star Trek Beyond and Star Trek: Discovery being made, and claimed that they did all of this to shut down "superior" works by fans. The more calm and collected of these people have pointed out that it wouldn't have gotten this far had Peters decided not to essentially use the Star Trek name to buy his way into being legitimate. They've also pointed out that the creator of Star Trek: New Voyages was given permission from the two companies to allow paid tours of his "Desilu" studios, and that CBS had previously told YouTube to drop a copyright claim against Star Trek Continues (filed by a third party).
    • There has also been backlash against actor Tony Todd from some of the same fans, who publicly announced a year before Axanar was shut down that he had quit the project and Peters was still using his name and image to promote it.
    • At this point, thanks to the new guidelines, if the production will proceed, it will have to be drastically reduced in time and budget, and no fan production is allowed to use any current or past actor or staff member associated with official Star Trek works.
      • Per the 2017 Settlement Axanar will proceed but will be limited to 2 15 minute episodes, no more public fundraising (ie Kickstarter and the like) but they will be allowed to use the professional actors from Prelude if any want to return to reprise their roles.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Both the original fan film and its sequel are infamous thanks to the actions of Alec Peters, which included stealing from donor money, using the name and image of actor Tony Todd to promote the film months after the actor had officially quit the project, and essentially using the Star Trek brand name to buy his way into being legitimate. The resulting lawsuit from CBS/Paramount and their subsequent restrictions on future fan productions further tarnished his reputation.
