YMMV / Phil Spector

Go To

  • Genre Turning Point: With entire genres like Shoegazing and Baroque Pop influenced by his production style, it can be hard to understand just how innovative Spector was. His material seems to blend in perfectly with the 2000s chamber pop landscape. Somewhat fittingly, his final production work was in 2003, during the middle of said landscape's mainstream lifetime.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Goes for both individuals in this case: when Phil started firing a gun over John Lennon in the studio during the making of Rock 'n' Roll, Lennon told him, "Phil, if you're going to kill me, kill me. But don’t fuck with my ears. I need em."
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It's pretty much impossible to discuss Spector's invaluable contributions to music history without also mentioning his long history of unhinged and violent behavior, his poor treatment of musicians, and his murder conviction. So heavily did the latter come to overshadow him, in fact, that when he died in 2021, news outlets listed him as a convicted murderer first and a record producer second.
    • Ronnie Spector described him upon his death as "...a brilliant producer but a lousy husband".
  • Vindicated by History: A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector flopped when first released, largely due to it being released on the same day as John F. Kennedy's assassination. It wasn't until the album was re-released by Apple Records in 1972note  that it began being realized as the seminal Christmas classic it is considered today.
