YMMV / Naomi (2022)

Go To

  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Ray Porter and Ava DuVernay had a very cordial Twitter exchange in early 2021 concerning Darkseid, who appeared in Zack Snyder's Justice League and was voiced by Porter. Porter expressed support to the (since cancelled) New Gods film project of DuVernay and assured her he would be fine if she chose someone else to play the Dark Lord of Apokolips, and she thanked him. Comes Naomi, which was created by DuVernay, and Porter has a sizeable role as Brutus in the final episode.
  • Only the Author Can Save Them Now: In 1x11, Naomi is faced with a choice of whether to save her friends or a much larger group of her classmates. The only way it's possible for her to do both would be to use super speed, which she's shown no signs of manifesting before then. Despite this, after an encouraging speech, she's somehow not only able to move at super speed, but fast enough to cross an entire school building in the space of about a second.
  • Questionable Casting: A big reason why Lourdes was controversial among fans was because the show cast an obviously-adult actress in the role, which made her advances on Naomi seem a lot more predatory than intended.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: So many, thanks to the story being cut short. Will Naomi ever defeat Brutus? Will Dee reunite with his lost love?
    • Also, given that the multiverse is an important part of the plot, it would have been amazing for her to interact with CW heroes from other universes, such as the Flash. Sadly, this will probably never come to pass.
  • Uncertain Audience: It's a teen mystery series that has the trappings of the DC universe, but is not part of the main Arrowverse. A lot of Arrowverse fans skipped it because it had no relevance to the rest of the Arrowverse, while a lot fans of teen mystery shows skipped it because of its absurdly complicated plot. Add in a title that gave little indication of what the show was about, and the show had a very hard time finding an audience.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: When it comes out that Greg and Jennifer are aliens, they're treated as being terrible for lying to Naomi. It's hard for some viewers to take that seriously, given that they very clearly are doing it out of love for her and to give her a normal life. Both Dee and Zumbado have been leaving her alone for the same reason, and then things escalated very quickly.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: In the same episode, Lourdes acts as if Naomi is "betraying" her when she doesn't want to kiss, asking if Naomi was "only using me for a ride and then to hang out at the coffee shop." Naomi never made a move on her, almost all the flirting has been from Lourdes's end, and Naomi does have a boyfriend. Lourdes then starts gaslighting her and blaming her for not returning her feelings.
