YMMV / Makura no Danshi

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The first episode opens on a bed with a stuffed pink sheep toy on it. A split second later, Merry appears on the bed, and the sheep is gone. It's never mentioned again throughout the episode.
  • Fetish Retardant: The Flower Danshi episode. The scenario focuses on the viewer being in a room with a set of twins who want to have some fun with her. However, due to the twins' dialogue and their mannerisms, it's less sexy and more creepy.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Genre: Feel."
  • Moe: But of course. Pretty much everybody is this in one way or the other. Younger Merry and Hareto (the Cherub Boy) take the cake, though.
  • Older Than They Think: When the anime first came out, a lot of overseas anime fans found the concept of the anime weird, especially due to the fact that it was aimed at girls. Female-demographic first person series had been on the rise at the time; the popular + Kareshi anthology franchise, which began in 2014, has a very similar structure to Makura no Danshi.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • To the Training with Hinako OVAs, particularly the Sleeping video.
    • People tend to call the winter 2017 anime One Room a Gender Flipped one to this series, though it focuses on 3 girls rather than 12. That series' official counterpart, Room Mate, is a straighter example, but that one's a reverse harem show.
  • Squick: The fact that a little boy, Hareto, is one of the options here. And unlike characters like Mitsukuni Haninozuka, he's not older than he looks—he's explicitly stated to be five. Granted, he's intended to just be a "surrogate little brother" character and nothing romantic happens with him in his episode... but given the context of literally every other character in the cast, it's easy to get the wrong idea. His character description, which describes him as a "cheerful, hot boy" in the official English subs, doesn't help.
