- And You Thought It Would Fail: When the film was first announced, a majority of audiences rolled their eyes at the prospect of a Netflix-exclusive, animated children's film about a talking animal played by Adam Sandler putting on a goofy voice and produced by Happy Madison Productions (infamous for releasing many notoriously awful movies). Lo and behold, upon its release many found it to be a perfectly heartwarming and funny tale that teaches genuine and realistic life lessons with animation, music, and characters that go beyond what one would expect from simply looking at the poster.
- Awesome Art: Following their success at The Sea Beast when it comes to animation, Netflix exceeded the bar and delivered a movie that is probably more detailed than the previous mentioned production.
- Crosses the Line Twice: Leo recounting Hammy #3's less than enthusiastic funeral:Kid 1: I liked that white spot over his ear.
Kid 2: I liked the way he breathed.
Kid 3: He gave me pinkeye. - Designated Villain: Coach Kimura refusing to take a detour from going to the amusement park to find Leo at the Everglades is treated as an obstacle in the path of the rest of the class, and they dupe him and leave him behind the first chance they get. However, he was right in that the Everglades is established to be a long way away from school, and taking a detour to go there before the amusement park would likely cause parents to worry about what's keeping their children. On arrival, he is happy to buy a large bundle of candy, drinks and other souvenirs for the kids without hesitation, and the kids use his generosity as a distraction to commandeer the bus, leaving him behind, having been hit by a car and squirted in the face with hand sanitizer for his troubles. Fortunately, he shows up at the graduation ceremony afterwards with no word about this, so something must’ve been worked out.
- Sweet Dreams Fuel: This is a kind of movie where all characters have some goodness in them and has many wholesome moments.
- Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The kindergarteners due to their oversized heads with weird-looking teeth and fish-like eyes. Made worse whenever they’re right next to any other human character.
- Visual Effects of Awesome: This after The Sea Beast has to be the most detailed animated movie released by Netflix: everything is beautifully animated to fur on mammals, human hair, buildings, clothes, water, foliage and finally reptile scales. This was animated by Animal Logic, the same studio that brought you The LEGO Movie nonetheless.
