The 1947 film:

  • Complete Monster: Tommy Udo is a giggling psychopath whose talkative, friendly demeanor belies a monster who would gladly kill anybody for any reason his mind could dream up. Having already been behind bars for a brutal prior murder he'd committed – where he established his cruelty to his cellmate, Nick Bianco, by telling him he'd eagerly gouge out the eyes of a guard annoying him on his patrol duty until the man dropped dead – and subsequently acquitted and released for lack of evidence, Udo corners the elderly, wheelchair-bound mother of a man he believes ratted him out and tosses her to her death down a flight of stairs with a gigantic smile on his face. Possessed of a seething hatred of Nick for testifying against him, Udo makes it his mission to destroy him and his family, not-so-subtly threatening to target Nick's wife and kids while remarking his preferred murder of "squealers" is to shoot them in the belly to let them "roll around for a long time, thinking it over" and finally managing to shoot Nick while laughing his head off. A perpetually-grinning, unstable nightmare of a man, Udo is one of the most frightening villains to ever come out of the early Film Noir genre.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Tommy Udo crosses it when he shoves elderly, wheelchair-bound mother of a man downstairs in the wheelchair and kills her.
  • Signature Scene: Tommy Udo murdering the wheelchair-bound Mrs. Rizzo by pushing her down the stairs.
