- Awesome Music: The Japanese opening and ending credits deserve a mention.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In Episode 22, a dwarf shows up in Räikkölä farm before Aunt Gunilla starts her story. Mr. Räikkölä and Aapeli are the only ones who think there is something strange going on.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Popular in the Netherlands where it was rebroadcast often, and even the DVDs were sold there.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: In Episode 26, Katri receives Les Misérables book from Martii's sister as a thanks for protecting the Halma farm from thieves. Little did not know that book would be adapted as a World Masterpiece Theater animation 23 years later.
- Strangled by the Red String: The engagement between Akki and Emilia comes out from nowhere and feels rushed.
- Tear Jerker:
- The separation between Katri and her mother in the first episode.
- Episode 30 has the death of Aunt Gunilla. Katri tears when she remembers how Gunilla treated her with kindness while reading a story to Klaus.
- The death of Captain Kuusela in Episode 34.
- Vindicated by History: The show received low ratings on its initial run in Japan and it was believed to be So Okay, It's Average. Nowadays, appreciation to the show grew strong and it is considered as one of the best entries in World Masterpiece Theater according to the official poll.
- Watched It for the Representation: Many people took an interest in it because it's set in Finland. Quite a few of it's newer fans are Finnish viewers who took an interest about their country being portrayed in an anime, even though it never received a Finnish dub.
