Genius Bonus: The math problem Jeanne introduces in class is the Collatz Conjecture. The Collatz conjecture is an algorithm that produces 1 out of any positive integer. If the integer is an even number you simply divide it by 2, if it's odd you multiply it by 3 and add 1, and the result will eventually lead back to 1. The conjecture is later allegorically reflected in the film's climax when Simon asks Jeanne whether 1 and 1 can make 1, referencing the Parental Incest inherent in their birth. Commensurate with the Collatz conjecture, two becomes one.
Complete Monster: Nihad Harmanni, in stark contrast to his stoic depiction in the film adaptation, is originally portrayed as a loud and childish psychopath with delusions of being a misunderstood artist. Joining a radical resistance movement in the south of a war-torn Middle Eastern country as their best sniper, Nihad liked to take pictures of his many victims, including children. After defecting to an invading foreign army, Nihad changed his name to Abou Tarek and became the feared Torture Technician of a POW Camp in Kfar Rayat, where he raped several women for years, even impregnating his own mother when she was sent to him.
