YMMV / High Card

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The opening theme, "Trickster" by FIVE NEW OLD, playing with the series Playing Card Motifs and accompanied by an amazing art style. And then there's the full version!
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Danny Wesley a.k.a. Sonic Move earned many fans because he's using his Card to help people unlike the other Players and even helping Finn and Chris when the civilians on the temple were in danger despite that those two are after him. It doesn't hurt that he is voiced by Kensho Ono and has a hunky Gentle Giant design. Many viewers were dismayed that he got captured by High Card in the end and hoped to see him again.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Ban and Theodore in "Once Upon A Time", not at all helped by the title making their past history together sound like they're talking about a fairy tale. Ban's habit of being up in his face and even grab his face the day they met, their blossoming friendship with each other, and even Norman mentioning that their cards being the King and Queen of Diamonds probability means they're drawn to each other. Then in "Winner or Loser", Theodore reveals his reason for stopping Ban from using the X-Hand is because he cared for him.
    • While the show normally tends to have the moments between Finn and Chris be seen as them just them being close buddies, the above episode blatantly sets them up as a present day equivalent to Ban and Theodore.
    • The sheer dedication Owen Alldays has towards Theodore at times comes off like a Subordinate Excuse. Unfortunately, the Klondike family easily exploits this.
  • I Knew It!: Viewers speculate that TILT is Finn's older brother and while others theorized Apple Link is Finn's brother. Then, both "Winner or Loser" and "Sweet Home" confirm that both theories are correct with a twist: TILT also disguises as Apple Link by using Burst's Ace of Hearts' Card so he can watch Finn.
  • Narm: "To Be Apart" ends with a major Wham Shot of Chris shooting Finn and leaving him for dead. The fact that this really dark scene is immediately followed up by the upbeat and jovial ED is jarringly hilarious, doubly so because the first shot of the ending animation is Chris singing happily while driving.
  • Spiritual Successor: As revealed in the 2022 Anime NYC convention, the show is inspired by the Kingsman franchise given the over-the-top action and the stylish designs.
