YMMV / Hello Neighbor 2

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: Hello Neighbor 2 is a Surprisingly Improved Sequel in contrast to its predecessor, yet it garnered a mixed reaction on release for a variety of reasons. On the positive side, many praise the more telegraphed mission and level structure, the puzzles featured being more comprehensible and fun to deduce, and other quality of life features such as better Jump Physics and a camera system to aid in stealth. On the other side, many bemoaned the variety of cut features — the neural network AI, the open-world progression, and The Guest roaming at night — that were promised and advertised yet removed by the final game, in addition to other complains such as the (since patched) lack of polish, the game having No Ending at release, and the day one DLC suffering from a variety of glitched-based problems.
  • Obvious Beta: The day one DLC, Back to School and Late Fees, takes the otherwise alright base game, and somehow breaks it apart with a variety of glitches and oversights. Both suffer from AI that either gets stuck or easily distracted, and the game can crash as a result of either the physics (different from the vanilla game) or player/AI interaction. BtS has the problem of the dog taking all your items if it catches you, yet doesn't reset the player/game unlike all other characters that hunts the player, resulting in a Game-Breaking Bug if a certain key item is on hand. LF in particular got the raw end of the deal: building structure such as windows frames and roof vents not being attached, books were floating above ground, and terrain outside the building overlapped, in addition to being impossible to complete at launch, due to the final puzzle being unable to properly register and trigger the ending sequence.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Hello Neighbor had its premise as a Stealth Horror squandered by the shift in focus for the final release, with players off-put by the nonsensical puzzles, platforming with dodgy jumping physics, and the expansive house in Act 3 that bloats the experience, all while the advertised "learn from your mistakes" AI gets put to the wayside in terms of focus. Hello Neighbor 2 addresses quite a few of the problems: the puzzles are more comprehensible and reserved strictly for each location, the platforming controls were refined, and the game better telegraphs what the player is supposed to do for their goal.
