YMMV / Hazbin Hotel S1E5 "Dad Beat Dad"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Lucifer is first introduced with his back to the camera, his hands near his crotch and grunting out the words "That's it... almost there..." right before showing off the rubber duck he made; while the scene was probably meant to look ominous at first, a few fans have noted that it also makes him look like he's masturbating. The fact that the scene prior to this one has Charlie point out that her parents are separated makes it even funnier.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Why is Alastor antagonizing Lucifer? Is he threatened Lucifer might supplant his role in the Hotel, or simply irritated Lucifer doesn't know who he is and is disrespecting the work he has put into the hotel? Given he drops his hostility at the end, it's even possible he was egging Lucifer on so he'd try to prove his usefulness to Charlie (namely by arranging the meeting with heaven).
    • What does Alastor truly feel about the hotel? Him styling himself as the Team Dad in their Found Family seems obviously insincere, and he's directly stated he doesn't believe in Charlie's vision. But Charlie herself seems convinced he really cares about the place, and he has consistently been nothing but helpful to the hotel and her goals (despite having no formal agreement mandating that). His conversation with Mimzy afterwards also implies he might be taking the hotel's mission more seriously than originally expected, and he looks genuinely pleased when Lucifer agrees to help Charlie arrange a meeting with Heaven, though that latter could just be his implied genuine love towards his mother if his fondness for her jambalaya recipe in the pilot is any indication.
    • Does Charlie really think Alastor has faith in her, despite him repeatedly saying that he doesn't, or is she just manipulating her father? It could also be a case of Calling the Old Man Out, since regardless of what Alastor's true feelings may be, he technically has still been helping the hotel, whereas Lucifer, despite being Charlie's actual father, has offered her no help at all and was even encouraging her to abandon her plan.
    • During the flashback, was Lilith going out of her way to keep Charlie and Lucifer apart or was she simply taking her to bed after having stayed up too late?
    • Is Lucifer banned from heaven, or is he just too traumatized by his fall to return? His reaction during "More Than Anything" at the angelic spear turning on Charlie and his depression imply the latter.
  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: Lucifer's surprised but positive reaction to learning about Charlie and Vaggie's relationship can additionally be read as relief that Charlie and Alastor are not romantically involved.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Alastor transforming into a giant to eat the literal Loan Sharks about to attack the Hotel is pretty damn terrifying. Then he yells "I WILL DEVOUR EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!" in an over-the-top manner while doing a couple goofy faces, pushing the entire scene into darkly comical absurdity.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • The first half of "Hell's Greatest Dad" has a very similar rhythm to "Other Friends" as compared here, where the background music of "Hell's Greatest Dad" matches the singing of "Other Friends" perfectly. Both songs are electro-swing. For bonus points, Sarah Stiles voices both Spinel and Mimzy.
    • The lyrics and beat for the first half also have a lot of similarities with "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin. With Lucifer in the part of Genie telling Charlie all the things he can do for her.
  • Woolseyism: In the German dub, Alastor's Precision F-Strike is translated literally, but Alastor notably continues to use the formal "you" rather than the informal onenote  even when saying "fuck you" to Lucifer. This indicates that he's still speaking formally while cussing out the king of Hell, adding another layer to the already Sophisticated as Hell statement.
