YMMV / Harvestella

  • Critical Dissonance: A case where it goes both ways: Most critics considered the game So Okay, It's Average, with its scores hovering around the 7.0 mark, considering it a typical action RPG with tacked-on and underutilized farming mechanics. Players, however, either really adored it or really hated it—either they felt lied to about the presence of life sim tropes in the game and considered it a shallow approximation of a "real" Farm Life Sim that was deeply unsatisfying... or adored its unique blend of tropes and its twisty story, stating that approaching it from the perspective of it being a "pure" life sim or a "pure" RPG is foolish when it's really its own hybrid thing and should be assessed as such. Either way, it has both a passionate fanbase and a passionate group of people who feel cheated by it, when the critical reaction was largely just "eh."
  • Demonic Spiders: Until you get way overleveled, the FEAR enemies are incredibly frustrating to fight and will whittle your health down fast with unavoidable attacks and a strong tendency to go straight for you, no matter how strong your party members might be. They're the only monster to drop accessories, but that's of course not a guarantee of a good one, and better yet, accessories can't be sold for anything, just merged or discarded. Bonus points go to the Arbiters of Love in the late game, which are perfectly stationary (and typically block doors) until the player gets into combat, at which point they start attacking and won't stop until one side is dead.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With fellow Farm Life Sim and Action RPG Rune Factory. Some have come to Harvestella solely for the fact that Rune Factory 5 hadn't met their expectations, and are simply tiding themselves over with Harvestella while waiting for either sequel to happen.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Poison, a bog-standard RPG status effect, is incredibly frustrating in this game. Why? Because tons of early-game enemies love to spam it, and there are no antidotes available early game. The only way to deal with it is to use healing items to keep your HP up until it goes away, and you'll end up afflicted with it often.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: You get to the farming simulation half an hour after story developments. What follows after that are more story developments with a limited time-frame of the day during the first week. It's after clearing Chapter 2 that your farm becomes more customizable with the introduction of expansions, facilities, and Fairy Orders.
  • So Okay, It's Average: A lot of praise goes into the beautiful scenery, amazing soundtrack, and good combat system and story, but most will say its farming sim elements aren't explored as much as the game advertises itself to be.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The Fairies of the Seaslights don't offer much to the main story after their introductions, being relegated to helping the protagonist with farm work instead. Even when there are times the Seaslights are crucial at specific moments, they don't appear to give their comments.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: The Omens have genders, but you'll have a hard time trying to tell that without the pronouns being said. For reference, Dianthus, the first Omen who joins you, is female.
