YMMV / Gold (2017)

Go To

  • Award Snub: The film got six nominations at the 2017 Goya Awards, yet won none, which was seen as a travesty in several of them.
  • Awesome Music: The soundtrack, including the insert vihuela song (De los álamos vengo, madre) and the ending theme (Oro by José Mercé).
  • Cliché Storm: Filmic accomplishments aside, the movie was controversial for indulging so relentlessly in Black Legend stereotypes, which almost form a parade here: the purely gold-greedy adventurers, the hypocritical and abusive Catholic priest, the war dog that terrifies the indigenous, the native guide forced into conquering, the normalized mass rape of women, the murderous authoritarism, the constant brawls and rebellions out of sheer gold madness... It's notable that Pérez-Reverte himself, an author whose views of those topics can be very ambivalent, came to believe the producers had given a completely unbalanced portrayal of history.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Marchena makes a point about how the expeditioners are seeking glory and fame. Conversely, Juan José Ballesta, who plays Iturbe, went into an acting hiatus for several years after the film due to personal problems related to his fame as an actor (he already had a history of this, being more of less a real life Former Child Star).
  • Questionable Casting: The presence of Juan José Ballesta (popularly known in Spain as a Mr. Fanservice who acts like a Lower-Class Lout in all of his roles) and Anna Castillo (an eternally teen-looking actress known mostly for comedic roles) was considered puzzling at the best in this film, especially given that their acting inevitably looked awful next to terrific actors like José Coronado and Óscar Jaenada.
  • Special Effect Failure: Achache's execution. It is painfully visible that the prop dagger is just pushing against Christian Esquivel's shirt instead of stabbing through.
