  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Enemy walkers, especially those that fire Spread Shot large missile attacks. These thing have a TON of health and deal a load of damage. Even worse, the machine gun variant will fire a few rapid shots at you upon death as a Last Breath Bullet.
    • Large helicopters have lots of health and spam spreads of slow rockets, fire volleys of fast but destructible rockets, and also shoot the occasional homing missile. Furthermore, they tend to keep at range over pits you cannot reach.
    • Katharsis gunships spray dual-powerful shots and fire homing missiles. Like the helicopters, they also have a massive amount of health and often appear above pits you can't reach from afar. For added fun, the level "Downtown" pits you against two of these at a go a few times, and one of these with a large helicopter at the same time.
  • Difficulty Spike: The Vanguard is much tougher than the four levels that come before it, as it's the first time the player will experience Bullet Hell.
  • Excuse Plot: Perhaps best summed up when you defeat The Dragon...and the way you know he's The Dragon is if you read the achievement description.
  • Goddamned Bats:
    • Landmines. They appear in huge numbers and explode if you get near them or shoot them, causing you to either watch your step or waste time shooting them and waiting for them to detonate, giving you less space to avoid other enemy attacks. Finally, they make a very annoying whine when they're triggered, leading to a cacophony in minefield areas.
    • Small bombers have decent health for a weak mook and chase you around until they drop their bomb which does heavy area damage. If you destroy them, they still drop their bomb! The trick here is that they always drop their bomb forwards.
    • The foot soldiers can become like this if they attack in large swarms from all sides.
    • Stealth soldiers. They make a white flash and a whistle whenever they uncloak to fire a fast, damaging projectile, before moving away and cloaking again. Problem is that the first level they appear in is filled with snow, making it near-impossible to detect where they will appear.
    • The three specialized tanks:
      • The EMP tanks fire an electrical stream that doesn't hurt you but makes you unable to attack.
      • The forcefields project a nigh-invulnerable forcefield around itself that lasts for 10 seconds before having to recharge. All mooks within the forcefield are protected from all attacks save the Spark Bomb and the Boosted Grenade.
      • The slowing tanks fire a purple beam that makes you EXTREMELY slow but doesn't do any damage.
  • That One Attack:
    • The Butler's Spread Shot of rolling boulders. There's at least 10+ shots in each spread, each shot moves in a "bouncy" motion which makes it hell to avoid, each shot hurts a lot, and many spreads are fired out during the course of the attack.
