YMMV / Enigma

Tropes for the Vertigo Comic Enigma:

  • Fair for Its Day: The comic seems to portray Enigma using his powers to change the protagonist's sexual orientation from straight to gay, in an inversion of Cure Your Gays. This is portrayed as a good thing, with Titus Bird congratulating the protagonist for coming to accept a seemingly magical change that was imposed on him against his will. Just imagine how bad that would sound if the change had been the other way. However, this comic is also very progressive in its handling of queer relationships, featuring Michael being happier as a homosexual than as straight and Enigma's love for him being a Pet the Dog to show he isn't entirely heartless. It also helps it featured the first gay kiss in comics, and averts But Not Too Gay by showing Mike and Enigma naked in bed together and making it clear they had sex. Some reviewers and fans of the comic prefer to explain it as Michael Smith being Closet Gay and unaware of his own sexual orientation with Enigma using his powers to merely "unlock" his latent homosexuality, making it less troubling.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Head, who is a "brain junkie" with a severe case of Body Horror and the Truth, that forces people to accept lies they tell themselves. Mother also counts.
  • Spiritual Successor: There have been scholarly works comparing this comic to the works of Steve Gerber in Marvel in The '70s. That would make writer Titus Bird an Expy of Gerber himself.
  • Squick: The repeated instances of characters eating lizards can get pretty disgusting.
