YMMV / DuckTales (2017) S1 E18 "Who Is Gizmoduck?!"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: According to Frank Angones' tumblr, those names Mark Beaks wrote all over his wall, combining his name with Gizmoduck's, was supposed to just be him coming up with the name "Waddleduck." His target audience, however, read them as Portmanteau Couple Names.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Was Huey just wanting the piece of paper to be recycled or was he secretly hoping Gizmoduck would "recycle" his faith?
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Mark Beaks revealing himself to be an Opportunistic Bastard who uses the facade of wanting the Gizmoduck glory without the heroics is already harsh. It rings even more harshly in light of the episode airing during the same week as similar stories about CEO Elon Musk broke.
    • Gyro's actions in this episode make a lot more sense when Season Three shows what happened the last time one of his inventions was supposed to protect a city.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When Fenton tells Mark Beaks that someone falling to their death wouldn't have the time to open the Waddle app, Beaks replies saying it's possible. Flashback to "The Infernal Internship of Mark Beaks!", where Beaks leaps off a roof after his phone to post one last message.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Mark Beaks crosses it in this episode when he uses the Gizmoduck suit as a profitable Waddles venture, which as Huey and Fenton point out is not the point of a superhero suit.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Gyro and Huey mentor Fenton in different ways - Gyro tells Fenton not to rush into superhero work, while Huey encourages Gyro to follow his heart and be a hero. Gyro and Huey never end up debating with each other about how Fenton should be utilizing the Gizmoduck suit. Especially frustrating, as their opposing demands pull Fenton in different directions and they both end up yelling at Fenton when he fails to please either of them.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Gyro's continued verbal abuse of Fenton and his trying to destroy the Gizmoduck armor after Fenton saves Mark Beaks are supposed to make him come across as yet another obstacle to Fenton becoming a hero. However, given that Scrooge was threatening to cut his funding as a result of the problems his previous inventions caused and the suit was creating a lot of collateral damage during the episode, Gyro's actions instead come across as completely understandable.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: While we're supposed to root for Fenton finding his path as a hero, his defiance of Gyro's orders to not utilize the still unprepared suit make Fenton come off as a Leeroy Jenkins. A well-meaning one, but still...
