  • Unintentional Period Piece: The specific series that are referenced and the general fan culture portrayed at the Fan Convention Yatta!Con firmly place the story in the early-to-mid 2000s.
    • Glomping is common throughout the story. Emily complains that people keep glomping her because they mistake her for a cosplayer of their favorite character, and Matt specifically has to wear a shirt telling people not to do it to him. These days, most fans (particularly older ones) frown on the idea of just jump-hugging someone without permission, especially someone you don't know, not just because it's rude but also because people have gotten hurt. Most conventions these days have outright banned it.
    • At one point in Volume 3, a shopkeeper suggests a yaoi paddle to Christie as a weapon of blunt force retribution against Matt. This further cements the series as a product of the Turn of the Millennium, as by the early 2010s, most if not all major conventions banned them after multiple incidents of serious paddling-related injuries.
  • Values Resonance: The theme about cosplay persecution, which is still something being dealt with by pretty much every fandom that involves cosplay today.
  • The Woobie: Beth, so very much.
    • Christie, especially in the first volume.
    • Matt, regarding the bullying he went through because of his missing eye as well as being humiliated in volume two when Emily pulled his sunglasses off in front of everyone. You really feel for the poor guy.
    • Emily is a Jerkass Woobie. Yes, she can be a bit of a bitch, but when you consider that her boyfriend is still in love with someone else, the "someone else" in question loves him back, and the boyfriend's sister is a Shipper on Deck for the boyfriend and the other girl, it's hard not to feel a bit sorry for her.
