YMMV / Drainus

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: English-speaking shmup players have poked fun at the title sounding like a Portmanteau of "drain" and "anus", or "drain" and "ass".
  • Scrappy Mechanic: In the initial release of the game, Arcade mode was widely disliked because you could only pause once per stage and between stages, and there's a 90-second time limit. It didn't help that the game still threw both loops of the game at you, so you pretty much needed to have two hours of time set in advance. Finally, there was no option to quit out to the title screen; the only way to do so was to suicide all of your remaining lives. An update released shortly thereafter added the option to open an alternate pause menu by holding down the pause button; this menu has no time limit and gives the option to quit. However, as the regular pause menu can still only be activated once per stage and is still triggered by tapping the pause button, it's still easy to accidentally use up your pause and thus opportunity to upgrade your ship or change equipment, when you may want to save it up for a later point within the stage.
  • Spiritual Successor: This is regarded by many as a great Gradius sequel, thanks to the use of a power-up meter (although a much less resource-hungry one), several weapon types that borrow from that series, such as terrain-hugging missiles and Bits that are basically Options in all but name, and the use of bosses with weak-point cores. The ability to rearrange which items are on the powerup bar and the use of Sprite/Polygon Mix make it evocative of Gradius Gaiden in particular.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The game has what appears to be sprites that are capable of very smooth scaling and rotating with lots of animation frames. They're actually low-poly 3D models that, at a quick glance, are virtually indistinguishable from sprites.
