YMMV / Donkey Kong 3

• Common Knowledge: There's no evidence that Stanley is Mario's cousin. Evidently, fans believe everyone who wears overalls has to be related somehow. It helps though that Stanley looks a bit similar to Mario.
• Cult Classic: The game is quite obscure among both Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. fans, but it does have its fans. To the point where many wish for Stanley to return in a later Mario game.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: For a character who only ever physically appeared in 3 games, including this one, Stanley the Bugman is quite popular among both Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. fans, many wishing for him to return some time in the future.
• Nightmare Fuel: When Stanley loses a life, all the enemy bugs on the screen swarm his lifeless body, and when they leave, nothing is left but his spray bottle. This only appears in the arcade version. Even the Nintendo port, while omitting this, still has surprisingly scary music that plays when Stanley dies, much scarier than the goofy music of the first two games.
• Replacement Scrappy: Stanley was originally this for replacing the beloved Mario. Nowadays, he is considered an Ensemble Dark Horse.
• Sequelitis: General consensus is that, while not a bad game by any means, it does not reach the same level of quality as the previous two Donkey Kong games. Mainly due to replacing Mario with Stanley, and changing the gameplay into a Shoot 'Em Up.
• The Woobie: Stanley the Bugman is incredibly pitiable from both a gameplay perspective and a meta perspective. From a gameplay perspective, whereas Mario had a known history with Donkey Kong before the events of the first two games, Stanley is merely an Innocent Bystander-turned-protagonist who just wanted to keep his greenhouse free from pestilence before Donkey Kong came in and caused a raucous for no good reason. Stanley is shown to constantly be on edge, losing his cool whenever something goes wrong, and when he loses a life, the bugs swarming his greenhouse devour him alive. From a meta perspective, Donkey Kong 3 is Stanley's only major appearance, meaning he got Chuck Cunninghamed and never got the opportunity to show off his mettle again with his only appearances being cameos including a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee and a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and an appearance in the Saturday Supercade episode "Greenhouse Gorilla".
