YMMV / Cinematic Venom

Go To

  • Friendly Fandoms: With Cinematic Excrement due to both the fans and both reviewers being friends in real life.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: His review of the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy earned infamous status for this, and it was his most-viewed video after the videos about the "Change the Channel" controversy and his review of Home Alone 5 (at least before he deleted his channel). The issue isn't that he didn't like the films for most people, but more so that his reasons for disliking it came across as him having not actually watched the film, as he commonly mistakes elements of the film (such as at one point thinking Gimli was saying Frodo and Sam should die in the third film), misses the story reasons for certain things (such as why Aragorn didn't use the Army of the Dead against Sauron), or in general his criticisms are very shallow and he doesn't actually explain why they were bad. The fact he spends a good number of the review making jokes about Sam being gay for Frodo among other jokes like that, caused the video to be very negatively received by people. He later discussed this after the video became popular years later, acknowledging his mistakes with it the review but by then it was already years after he made it, and that he feels Old Shame for the review.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • A weird case in that Rob Boor and the show managed to be overshadowed by a controversy revolving around a network Boor wasn't even part of. Boor presented himself as a staunch supporter of the #ChangeTheChannel movement and in May 2019 released a feature-length documentary on the subject, "The Downfall of Channel Awesome", that received endorsement from some key players of the movement. That November, he broke ties with #ChangeTheChannel and subsequently released a follow-up documentary, "The Downfall of #ChangeTheChannel", accusing certain key players in the movement - Holly Chistine Brown, Eric Rodriguez and his wife Marsha Kent and Allison Pregler - of turning on him for no reason and slandering his reputation after all the support he gave to the movement and also them being guilty of some of the things they accused Channel Awesome of being - lying, hypocrisy, covering up misdeeds, egotism, bullying, using an audio recording of Mike Michaud's voice without his consent, chastising Holly Brown for hiding the JewWario controversy from other producers (despite the fact that she got her orders from Michaud and couldn't do anything to stop it) like not trying to stop Marzgurl from making a movie honoring Justin even though she had a chance to warn her and at last ignoring those not in their social circle and immaturity (namely on Twitter). He even claimed that at least one item in the original document was fabricated (the entry by Dr. Gonzo), while it seems others were exaggerated. This led to their credibility being called into question and the creation of a new movement called #ChangeChangeTheChannel, though Boor insisted that it doesn't exonerate Channel Awesome for what they did.
    • However, this in turn created a controversy around Boor himself, as his #ChangeTheChannel campaign attracted attention to his earlier videos where he appeared to make racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic jokes, which led to both sides of the debate questioning his credibility (especially as he was never a member of the organization). Boor initially apologized for making those jokes, then subsequently reneged on said apology after leaving #ChangeTheChannel. He also generated controversy for the comments he made in the aforementioned anti-CTC documentary, such as defending his right to say the n-word and defending his right to make rape jokes by discrediting Lindsay Ellis with her "Rape Rap" video, note  along with taking back his apology of his use of a gay slur in an older crossover with The Rap Critic along with complaining about the fact Rap Critic later blocked him over this even though Rob Boor went on to apologize publically about it on social media as well as fully owning up to the controversy, only to end up being ignored by Rap Critic. This would ultimately lead Boor to announce another documentary, "The Downfall of Cinematic Venom", in which he would respond to the numerous accusations against him, and which also served as the end of the channel.
