YMMV / Children of Remnant

  • Accidental Aesop: Jacques, Ghira, Winter, and Kali accidentally spread the message that acting on incomplete information will only make things worse - while they believe that Jaune's death could potentially return the rest of the Claimed to their normal selves, it's pretty much the exact opposite, and they almost doom the world because they put their trust in someone they really shouldn't have.
  • Adorkable: Jaune himself. Despite his status as Prince of the Grimm, he's just as dorky and awkward as he was in canon. Special mention goes to calling Arthur Watts so that he can illegally buy beer for a party.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Jaune's fear of the dark is Played for Laughs at first, since he still sleeps with a night light and it allows Blake to sabotage it so that she could comfort him. With the later reveal that his fear of the dark comes from The Hole that Salem would imprison him in whenever he acted up, Blake's actions come across as one of the most horrible and manipulative things anyone does across the entire story.
    • Every heartwarming or funny moment involving the Claimed's relationship with Salem falls into this when it's revealed that she never cared about them at all, purposefully manipulating and torturing them their entire lives so that they would want nothing more than to destroy humanity - and that Jaune was going to be one of her sacrifices in that endeavor.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Cinder Fall is Queen Salem's chief strategist, put in charge of ensuring her war with humanity begins. To that end, she manipulates the Claimed to earn their trust, whispering in Jaune's ear to attempt to trick him into war. Behind the scenes, she hires Dr. Merlot to trick the Schnees and Belladonnas into attempting to assassinate Jaune, utilizing her spies to ensure they go through with the plan; simultaneously, she raises public tensions against the Claimed by assassinating anti-Grimm speakers and advocating for war. When her plan ultimately fails and she learns of how she was manipulated by Salem, she turns against her former master and tells Jaune the truth of their "mother", ultimately dying while defeating Tyrian and taking the identity of the Summer Maiden to the grave.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: When Ozpin and Ironwood officially turn on each other later on, the chapter is framed as if they're going to physically fight. A fight between Ozpin and Ironwood isn't seen in fan works very often, and the author is well known for their engaging fight scenes, leaving a lot of untapped potential for a fight like this. Unfortunately, if it happened at all, it happened off-page, and the next time we see them Ironwood is peacefully resigning from his post.
