YMMV / Buffy the Vampire Slayer S1E2 "The Harvest"

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Jesse gets turned into a vampire, and Xander is forced to slay him. Neither Xander nor Willow seem that affected by this event, especially over the long term. Willow's reaction to his fate is a blunt "At least you two are okay." He is never mentioned again. Worse, this was their first exposure to the fact that vampires are real. The situation might have been different if the development plans for Jesse had come through, since a proposed line was for him to become a recurring, unapologetic vampire opponent (like vamp!Xander and vamp!Willow in the Wishverse). Jesse was also originally supposed to appear to Xander in "Conversations with Dead People", but their subplot was cut (incidentally making it the one episode Xander doesn't appear in).
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Angel's characterization is pretty different from what it will later become even as soon as a few episodes deeper in the season. This early version of him is much more joke-y and sarcastic than the later broody loner persona he'll grow into.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Willow suggests to Buffy that one way they could get kicked out of school would be to "blow up the school". The climax of season three sees her do exactly that.
  • Ho Yay: The ritual scene between the Master and Luke can be seen this way: "My blood is your blood...my soul is your soul...my body is your instrument."
  • Padding: Various scenes were added in as the episode was too short. These include the scene where Willow and Xander talk in the halls, the scene where the Master pokes out the vampire’s eye, the scene where Cordelia talks about seniors in the Bronze, and the scene where the defeated vampires run out of the Bronze past an impressed Angel.
