Belle and Sebastian the anime:

Belle and Sebastian the rock band:

  • Even Better Sequel: Their debut, Tigermilk, was very well-received, but its follow-up If You're Feeling Sinister is widely considered the band's masterpiece. Curiously, both albums were recorded within weeks of each other.
  • Ho Yay: "Seeing Other People," "She's Losing It," "Judy and the Dream of Horses," "Lazy Line Painter Jane," "Jonathan David," "Mary Jo"...suffice it to say that many of their songs contain a bit of Ho Yay.
  • I Am Not Shazam: Despite being a six-to-seven person unit, they would often be confused for a duo, with former cellist Bel Campbell naturally assumed to be "Belle" and frontman Stuart Murdoch assumed to be "Sebastian".
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: How the fanbase initially responded to "Legal Man", a blatant 60s' rock pastiche that ended up being their first top 20 single. It's been somewhat Vindicated by History following the success of Dear Catastrophe Waitress and The Life Pursuit, which were also more upbeat and retro-sounding than prior works.
  • Vindicated by History: While generally well-received, The Boy with the Arab Strap initially infamously landed a 0.8 score (out of 10!) on Pitchfork, which called the album "a parody". 20 years later, Pitchfork reassessed the album, gave it an 8.5 and removed the original review off the site.
