There is no such thing as a flawless system. No matter how we delude ourselves, the cracks will always appear. When that time comes for it to crumble under the weight of failed expectations, will you salvage the remains? Or, will you pretend that it was all just a bad dream?

The Secret Turnabout is a fan-made work for the Ace Attorney series. It was created by Trybien and Spongesonic using the Ace Attorney Online trial editor, as an entry for the trial competition Broken Commandments hosted on the website.

It is recommended for those who have played up through Spirit of Justice.

Following the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the implementation of the Jurist System was supposed to be a shining light in a time when the public’s trust in the courts was reaching an all-time low. Bizarrely, the trial of Vera Misham was the last we ever saw of the then disgraced Phoenix’s Wright’s grand project that was supposed to reshape the legal world. Few people know the truth of what happened, but rumor goes it’s tied to the larceny of the public prosecutor’s office that happened not long after. Those secrets will now be revealed…

These are the leaked documents pertaining to the “final test” of the ill-fated jury system. Discover the hidden truth about how the dreams of a brighter age of the law were shattered by a single rookie Defense Attorney, Aiden Gambit.

This fan case provides examples of:

  • Amoral Attorney: Corey Rupture. He was responsible for helping an assassin go free by discrediting the testimony of the 9 year old child of the victims.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Johnathan Seething gets away with his crimes and the Jurist System went up in smoke, reverting all the progress Phoenix worked towards. However, Judge Eerie was still proven innocent of Rupture's murder and Athena is able to convince Phoenix to give the Jurist System another shot.
  • Dirty Coward: Manny Steele is ultimately this. He was so terrified of losing his life that he went along with Corey Rupture's plan to discredit Johnathan Seething.
  • Gentle Giant: Judge Eerie, despite his being suspected for the murder, is an ultimately very friendly individual.
  • Karma Houdini: Johnathan Seething is ultimately able to get away with everything thanks to the jury being unable to come to a decision on Eerie's guilt.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Hercule Eerie. He constantly believes the existence of ghosts even when everyone else says otherwise.
    • Johnathan Seething, a man holding such intense, bitter rage towards the court system for what happened in the murder trial of his parents.
  • Spanner in the Works: Judge Eerie's discovery of Corey Rupture's body manages to derail Seething's plan in two ways; firstly, it delays the verdict of Manny Steele's trial until the new case is solved, allowing Apollo to prove his innocence. Secondly, Eerie himself gets accused of the murder instead of Seething's intended target, the Judge.
  • That Man Is Dead: When 'Aiden Gambit' is revealed to be Johnathan Seething, everyone is shocked by his immense hatred towards Corey Rupture and the court system, that everyone agrees that Johnathan Seething died on the night his parents did, and that the man who came back in his place 13 years later was never the same. Even Seething himself agrees, saying the courts were the ones who killed him.
  • The Stinger: After the credits role, a note is read to us from the developers stating their intent to continue the story... before we see Johnathan Seething in the Detention Center asking Athena for her help.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Winston Payne completely disappears after the end of the first segment with no explanation as to his absence.
  • You Are What You Hate: As is pointed out to Seething, the way he went about his revenge made him just like Corey Rupture, a man he utterly despises.

Maybe dreams aren’t meant to last forever…
