The game opens up with Kirby having just awakened from a nap only to see a mysterious vortex in the sky. Two mysterious shadows emerge from the vortex and destroy the Staff of Cosmos, shattering it into pieces. After witnessing this, Kirby heads off to search all over Dream Land in search of the missing pieces to restore the Staff of Cosmos before the mysterious invaders take over Dream Land.

- Big Bad: Metuo is behind the main conflict of the game.
- Boss Rush: One is unlocked by clearing the game and finding and defeating the two secret bosses.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: All the bosses are being mind controlled by the main villains.
- Degraded Boss: Paint Roller and Wiz were bosses in their respective games. Here they're both downgraded to mini-bosses.
- Hub World: Each level has one.
- An Ice Person: Pandora attacks using snowflakes and ice cubes.
- Infinity +1 Sword: The Staff of Cosmos. It is a very powerful weapon used against the final boss and it can be used in any level after beating the game.
- One-Winged Angel: Metuo transforms into a sphere-like form upon defeat for the first time.
- Optional Boss: Two appear after defeating the final boss and are located at two different levels in the game. They are Whispy Woods and Meta Knight.
- Playing with Fire: Molotov attacks using flames and fireballs.
- Unexpected Shmup Level: Using the Staff of Cosmos, Kirby has to give chase to Metuo (in his sphere form) in outer space before confronting him for the final showdown.
