Trivia / The Snowman

  • Creator Backlash: Subverted. Raymond Briggs became annoyed that the story overshadowed his other work, saying in later years that he was "heartily sick" of it and would even leave Christmas stores if they started playing "Walking in the Air." However, he also has stated multiple times that he does like the special and feels that the addition of Christmas elements worked well with it.
  • Creator Breakdown: Raymond Briggs was inspired to write the story after a series of personal tragedies, seeing it as a reflection on death.
  • The Merch: Seems The Snowman merchandise is wildly popular in Japan, including chicken sold with the Snowman's image, and various bathroom merchandise, including towels and toilet seat covers.
  • Referenced by...:
    • Irn-Bru recreated the flight sequence of the cartoon for a Christmas-themed advert with the boy and the snowman flying over Scotland and passing over landmarks like Edinburgh Castle, The Falkirk Wheel and George Square. The boy is swigging from a can of Irn-Bru, which he refuses to share with the Snowman. So the Snowman lets go of the boy, causing him to fall to the ground, and steals the Irn-Bru. There was even a sequel, where the boy flies a plane to take his can back, passing over other landmarks... and in the end, Santa Claus steals the can.
    • In Wintersmith, when the wintersmith creates a body out of snow, he briefly speaks to a group of kids who are disappointed that he's not going to take them flying.
    • Unusually for an American work to reference it, Kasia has Connor's British mother show Kasia the cartoon on Christmas Eve. We only get her reaction to the ending: her crying her eyes out like a baby. Connor remarks to his mother when inquiring as to why Kasia was crying (she had recently become homesick for her old life in the 16th century) that he remembered the first time his mother had shown it to him.
  • Stunt Casting: In order to introduce the special on HBO, they needed a name. They went with David Bowie because he was a big fan of Raymond Briggs' When the Wind Blows.
  • What Could Have Been: Before David Bowie was chosen to introduce the American version, Laurence Olivier and Julie Andrews were suggested.
