- Schedule Slip: As with Geoff Johns' other series from around the same time, this book suffered from several delays between issues. Jeff Loveness did a fill-in job for issue #12, that came out in June 2020, as the last Johns' issue before that came out in February 2020.
- Sequel Gap: To Johns' re-telling of Shazam from back in the early days of the New 52, which had finished in early-2013.
- Troubled Production: On top of Schedule Slip, this book had been in some form of development since Johns' re-telling of Billy's origin in 2012, Johns' commitment on other books and in helping oversee the DC's television and movie wings at the time also contributing.
