  • Dyeing for Your Art: Walter Matthau contracted pneumonia during a fight scene (which was filmed in sub-zero temperatures), and filming and release were delayed for several months as a result.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Walter Matthau informed his co-star Kevin Pollak that he only took part in this film because he was deeply in debt to his bookie and thought little of the script. Given the trials he went through in making the movie, he admitted that he should have asked for even more money.
  • Underage Casting: Although his character is supposed to be 94 years old in this movie, Burgess Meredith was in fact 85 years old when this movie was filmed and is only 17 years older than Jack Lemmon who portrays his son in this movie.
  • What Could Have Been: The film was meant to reunite Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, but both declined because of Martin's frail health which prevented him from taking the role.
