Trivia / George & Mildred

Go To

  • Died During Production: The series came to an end following Yootha Joyce's death from portal cirrhosis of the liver due to chronic alcoholism.
  • Recast as a Regular: Norman Eshley played Jeffrey Fourmile but was also in Man About the House (the series George & Mildred was spun-off from) as two different characters - One-Shot Character Ian Cross in Series 2 and Robin's brother Norman Tripp in Series 6.
  • Referenced by...: In Banjo-Tooie, an ice cube couple separated by a blizzard are named George and Mildred. Banjo and Kazooie accidentally kill George, and the two are forced to murder Mildred.
  • Throw It In!: Yootha Joyce had a habit of adding more cries of "George!" to her performance, knowing the audience would always laugh. Writer Brian Cooke remarked:
One episode, we counted them and there were thirty-four more "Georges" than we'd put in the script. So, we stopped using "George" at all, and she still managed to get ten or twelve in.
  • Trend Killer: The critical and commercial failure of The Movie in 1980 ended the trend of adapting Britcoms into feature-length films in the 1970s, with it not being until Bean in 1997 that the idea was even revisited.
  • What Could Have Been: There were plans for a sixth series, which would have been the last, as Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce were afraid of being typecast after playing the characters since 1973 on television and in two films. Joyce's hospitalisation and death put an end to these plans. Thames Television did consider producing a spin-off focusing on George coping with life as a widower.
