Go To

  • California Doubling: Although the movie takes place in Asia, the film was shot in Yugoslavia.
  • Fake Nationality: None of the actors are actually Mongol, and the Emperor of China is played by an Englishman.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Omar Sharif was furious that the $25,000 that Eli Wallach was earning per week was more than Sharif was being paid for the entire film. Wallach had only taken the role after a London play he was scheduled to appear in collapsed, and he was in urgent need of a quick payday.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Yul Brynner was considered for the title role, but was considered "too expensive" by producer Irving Allen.
    • Claire Bloom was attached at one point.
