  • Creative Differences: One of the reasons for the band breaking up. Chris Collingwood struggled with alcoholism and drinking which led him to take a backseat role as time went on. Adam Schlesinger took on more creative control, which led to some tension due to the power imbalancenote  In addition, there was an evolution away from the band's Power Pop sound.
  • Creator Backlash: As soon as Adam Schlesinger presented Chris Collingwood with "Stacy's Mom," Collingwood knew they had a hit on their hands, and he dreaded it, knowing this goofy novelty song was going to be their signature song to the general public. And that's exactly what happened, which Collingwood is vocally unhappy about to this day.
Chris Collingwood: He was too good a writer to have that be his calling card, and the success of a novelty song means that’s just what you are to the public, from that moment on forever.
    • A few years prior to "Stacey's Mom", US radio DJs unexpectedly started playing the B-Side of "Denise", a Cover Version of Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" done as a rock ballad. Fearing they were in danger of having their first big hit be a novelty cover song, they responded by withdrawing the single, albeit also putting the B-Side up as a free download on their website for the sake of fans. "...Baby One More Time" did eventually get an official release again on the B-Side album Out-of-State Plates.
  • One-Hit Wonder: "Stacy's Mom" is their only big hit. Slightly downplayed in the UK where they had two other songs that also cracked the top 40 charts ("Radiation Vibe" and "I Want An Alien For Christmas") though they still weren't nearly as big as Stacy's Mom.

  • What Could Have Been: The band wanted to get Ric Ocasek of The Cars to make a cameo appearance in the video for "Stacy's Mom" (since the song itself was an homage to The Cars), but according to Adam Schlesinger, Ocasek didn't respond. They also hoped to get Ocasek's wife at the time, Paulina Porizkova, to play the titular role of Stacy's mom, before ultimately getting model Rachel Hunter to play the role.
