Trivia / Doctor Who S5 E2 "The Abominable Snowmen"

Go To

  • California Doubling: The North Wales mountain pass at Nant Ffrancon was used for filming scenes set in Tibet.
  • Creator's Favourite Episode: Deborah Watling named this her favourite story because of getting to work with her dad.
  • Executive Meddling: Co-director Gary Russell mentioned in the preview for the animated reconstruction in Doctor Who Magazine that the BBC insisted on having the monks be given a Race Lift from their TV counterparts.
  • Fatal Method Acting: Averted. Filming for the story was done in a mountain pass after rains made the area slippery. According to Jack Watling, one of the actors who played the Yeti accidentally fell hundreds of feet off of the mountain pass, yet somehow survived the fall.
"[…] moral to that story is: if you want to get drunk and fall off a mountain; wear a Yeti costume, because it’s all foam rubber."
  • First Appearance: Of the Yeti and the Great Intelligence.
  • Missing Episode:
    • This is a six-episode serial, but only its second episode is known to have survived to the present day.
    • Episode 2 contains the only piece of missing audio in the series. At one point, the audio cuts out briefly before abruptly coming back in the middle of a line spoken by the Doctor. All known recordings contain this fault, so it is believed to have been an error with the original master tape. The VHS release edits out the offending line, and the DVD release contains a patchwork reconstruction using audio from other episodes.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: A common fan rumor claimed that Ralpachan's actor, David Baron, was actually Harold Pinter performing under a pseudonym, which Pinter himself denied.
  • Real-Life Relative: Jack Watling, Deborah Watling's father, plays Professor Travers, the anthropologist hunting for the Yeti. Deborah has said that she knew nothing about this until she arrived on set and saw her dad in character.
