Creator Killer: The director Donald Cammell was an avant-garde filmmaker whose 1970 film Performance, with Mick Jagger, gained considerable attention. Demon Seed was his only attempt at doing a studio production with a large budget. After its failure he completed only one more film in 1987 before his 1996 suicide.
Star-Derailing Role: For Julie Christie, the critical ridicule and financial failure of the movie version effectively undermined her status as a leading actress until the 1990s when she earned an Oscar-nomination for Afterglow.
