- Cast the Expert: Some of the townspeople in the movie were played by townspeople in the original case the movie was based on. This apparently led to legal issues when releasing the movie on home video when it came to negotiating the original agreements between the townspeople and the studio. A planned VHS release in the 1990's, as well as a planned DVD release in 2006, were scrapped until the movie finally came out on DVD in 2008.
- Production Posse: This was the first of four movies Elia Kazan directed Karl Malden in, as well as the first of two movies Kazan direct Lee J. Cobb in.
- Arthur Miller, who appears briefly in a police line-up, had three of his plays directed by Kazan - All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, and After The Fall.
- What Could Have Been: Lee J. Cobb was considered for Harris (the public works commissioner) and Dave Woods (the opinion columnist) before being cast as Chief Robinson (a role John Hodiak and John Ireland were considered for).
- Joseph Cotten, Walter Huston, and Fredric March were considered for Henry Harvey.
- Working Title: The Perfect Case.
