• The Cliffs of Inevitable Death and Dread Pirate Pipsqueak are a reference to The Princess Bride.
• The secret note on the train is a reference to the conspiracy in Small Gods.
• Baron Zeppeli shares his name with a character from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and he pursues the heroes in a zeppelin made of lead.
• Waterfire and Cherry Pie fighting over whether or not Tealove's eyes should be pink or blue is a reference to the fairies from Sleeping Beauty arguing over what color to make Aurora's dress.
• Colt Skylark's name is a nod to the rank of "Boy-Skylark" from Homestuck.
• The White Dragon Bush is a reference to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
• Big Tiny Little is named after the piano player from Lawrence Welk's band.
• Libra Ace starts off as a ponified version of Curly Brace from Cave Story. When the heroes meet her, she's in a cave, suffering from amnesia. Her first lines in the story are taken almost verbatim from Curly's first lines in the game. Her description of the white dragon bush's effect on ponies is identical to the red flowers' effect on mimigas. Her weapon of choice is a nod to the game's Lethal Joke Item, the Nemesis.
• Libra's disbelief in the existence of the outside world is a reference to Plato's Allegory of the Cave.
• The cultist's Organization is a nod to Organization XIII from Kingdom Hearts.
• Big Mac declares, "Come with me if you want to live."
• Applejack shouts a bowdlerized version of that famous line from Snakes on a Plane.
