The Lost Tales of Oz is a 2018 compilation of short stories about the Land of Oz written by various authors, edited by Joe Bongiorno, and illustrated by Eric Shanower.
The Lost Tales of Oz contains examples of:
- Bigger on the Inside: The Royal Library.
- Framing Device: The entire collection is framed as Trot and Betsy Bobbins read through stories found in the Royal Library.
- Great Big Library of Everything: The Royal Library has been enchanted by Glinda and the Wizard so that it can include an infinite number of books.
- Historical Domain Character: Laurel and Hardy are brought to Oz in 1939, with them getting replaced in our world by magical duplicates.
- Mythology Gag: The Wicked Years is noted as a popular series in the Great Outside World.
- Interquel: "The Other Searches for The Lost Princess" is set during the week-long Time Skip in Chapter 25 of The Lost Princess of Oz, as we follow the other three search parties looking for the titular lost princess.
- "Let's Watch Our Show" Plot: Chapter 3 of "The Wizard in New York" involves the Wizard watching the MGM adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the cinema, where he riffs on the changes made but still enjoys the film.
- Prequel: "The Wizard in New York" and "Ali Cat in Oz" are both prequels to Sam Sackett's own Oz novel, Adolf Hitler In Oz, with the latter explaining how the Laurel and Hardy-lookalikes ended up in Oz.
- Shout-Out: Among the books in the Other Fairylands section of the Royal Library are the Narnia and Prydain books, both of which Trot wants to read again.
Lost Histories from the Royal Librarian of Oz contains examples of:
- Atlantis: It, Lemuria, and Thuria are all mentioned as having been destroyed in the Great Cataclysm.
- Canon Welding: Zauberlinda The Wise Witch, an early Oz imitation, is brought into the Oz universe. This is done by making its titular witch Queen Lulea from Queen Zixi of Ix.
- Bran Mak Morn and Jirel of Joiry are mentioned.
