The first-season finale, originally aired on December 1, 1995.
Wanda is temporarily taking care of a dog named Penny. While the humans go out, Penny is left at the Talbots' house, where Wishbone entertains her with highlights from some of his favorite stories.
Tropes
- Bottle Episode: As you would expect of a clip show. In addition to all the fantasy segments being reused from previous episodes, the contemporary story takes place entirely inside the Talbots' house with Joe, Ellen, and Wanda being the only human characters to appear in new footage.
- Clip Show: Wishbone tells Penny about some of his favorite stories, with the help of clips from previous episodes. In the order they appear in this episode, the stories that he revisits are:
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ("A Tail in Twain, Part 1")
- The People Could Fly ("Bark that Bark")
- Don Quixote ("The Impawssible Dream")
- Pride and Prejudice ("Furst Impressions")
- The Odyssey ("Homer Sweet Homer")
- Ivanhoe ("Sniffing the Gauntlet")
- Frankenstein ("Frankenbone")
- Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc ("Bone of Arc")
- Oliver Twist ("Twisted Tail")
- Formula-Breaking Episode: Due to this being a clip show, the fantasy segments feature snippets of various stories rather than telling one single story throughout the episode like normal.
- Gender Scoff: After Penny gets scared by his retelling of Frankenstein, Wishbone mutters, "Pff, girls!"
- Season Finale: This is the final episode of the first season. It's a little strange that they would use a clip show for the finale, but given the title "Picks of the Litter," it's apparently intended to come across as a "best of" compilation.
- This Is My Chair: Wishbone briefly objects to Penny lying down in his big red chair.
- Suddenly Speaking: Throughout the episode, Penny has been silent, but at the very end, she startles Wishbone by saying, "Thanks for telling me all those great stories! Call me sometime!"
