Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 5 E 2 A Night Out With The Guys

Go To

Nandor and Laszlo go out with Sean and his friends, during which Nandor wants to proof he can get through the night without having to rely on his hyponitism. Nadja meanwhile finds out she might be cursed, and Guillermo tries to find out why his transformation to vampire is taking so long.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Sean and his friends quickly get drunk, resulting in them first getting into a Bar Brawl and then stealing, and crashing, a police car.
  • Body Horror: If an already successfully transformed vampire goes through the siring process a second time, their body violently explodes. Guillermo and the Baron find out the hard way when they try this on Jonathan, a vampire the Baron recently turned, to see if a second siring might solve Guillermo's problem.
  • I Do Not Drink Wine: Sean and his friends notice that Nandor and Laszlo never drink anything during their nights out. Laszo is able to convince them Nandor only likes red bull vodka, and that they both already drink before going out.
  • Insistent Terminology: The Guide insists Nadja has a hex placed on her and not a curse, as curses don't actually exist; they are just something people make up to explain their screw ups.
  • Never My Fault: Nadja is depressed because of the loss of her nightclub, ignoring the fact that she burned it down herself, and blames the guys for never telling her to slow down when she drank too much alcohol-blood, even though the others remind their that they did warn her.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Through inaction; Nandor and Laszlo could have stopped the drunken idiocies of Sean and his friends any moment by just using hypnotism, but don't since Nandor wants to proof he can get by without resorting to this.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: At the end of the episode, Laszlo confronts Guillermo, stating he knows what is wrong with Guillermo. Guillermo, believing the game is up, spills the beans that he asked Derek to sire him, which takes Laszlo completely by surprise as he thought Guillermo was just suffering a case of the shits and wanted to advice him to stay away from breakfast burritos.
  • Partial Transformation: Guillermo's attempt to turn into a bat only results in his ears temporarily becoming bat ears.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Jonathan, the Baron's new aide that he recently turned, is only there to demonstrate why trying to sire a vampire twice is a bad idea.
  • Secret-Keeper: Per this episode, Laszlo knows what Guillermo has done. He will keep it from Nandor because the reveal will be too much for Nandor to handle.
  • Spooky Photographs: When searching the vampire's house for the source of Nadja's hex, the Guide finds a photograph Yiaya Neikia, a woman known to bring bad luck on Antipaxos. Nadja tries to destroy the photograph by tearing and burning it, but every time the picture immediately reappears in it's spot on the bookshelf.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: The main conflict in Nandor and Laszlo's subplot comes from Laszlo accusing Nandor of using hypnotism to get out of any bad situation instead of relying on skills like charisma and being a good liar. Nandor tries to prove him wrong. Subverted in the end when Laszlo admits that he was just jealous of Nandor because he himself is bad at hypnotizing and can only do it if either Nandor is helping him or the person he tries it on already has a messed up mind, and actually asks Nandor to get them out of police custody.
  • Worth It: Nadja is so thrilled to have discovered the community of Little Anipaxos that she tries some of the authentic food that is sold there. Of course, this has the usual reaction of her violently vomiting it back up, but she declares it worth it.
  • You Didn't Ask: Nadja is angry at Colin Robinson for never telling her that all this time there was a small community of Antipaxos only a few blocks from their home. Colin responds that she never asked.
