Recap / Wakfu S1E5 "The Magnificent Five"

Go To

The group finds a village of Puddlies terrorized by a bunch of Taurs, and decide to help the villagers out. However, a divide in opinion makes it difficult to prepare the little Puddlies for the next attack.

Tropes:

  • Angry Dance: The Taurs have one they use to unleash their technique, parodying the famous Maori war dance.
  • As You Know: When they first run into the farmlands surrounding the Puddlies village, Eva gives an ominous speech wondering for how long the place will be safe with the impending threat of Ogrest' Chaos flooding the continents bit by bit. Justified when you remember that this episode was actually the first animated one, and thus features oddities such as not mentioning Skribble or Oma Island.
  • Attack Reflector: Eventually, Yugo uses his portals to send Mandale's blast back to him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: For all their faults, the Taurs become truly angry when Sadlygrove wounds their "little brother", and decide to unleash their technique on him.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Surprisingly enough, Percemool, the hero worshiped by the Puddlies.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After the Taurs are defeated, Yugo points out that they can actually work together with the Puddlies to tend the fields and share the harvest with them.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Eventually, the abused Puddlies turn against the Taurs and use their powers to attack them without retaliation.
  • Eye Scream: During the fight against Mandale, Yugo grabs on his horn while airborne and uses the momentum to deliver a kick to the face... which does nothing. Mandale grins, Yugo grins sheepishly in return before kicking him in the eye, causing him to recoil in pain.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Percedal and Eva get into an argument over how to prepare the Puddlies. Percedal wants to teach them combat, while Eva would rather they set up traps.
  • Horn Attack: The Taurs can charge up their horns and send out a massive swirling beam of energy at the enemy. Normal Taurs need to work together to shoot a single bullet, but their father Mandale can shoot a bigger one alone, shaped like a charging bull.
  • Large and in Charge: Mandale is the father and boss of the Taurs, and the largest of them all. Except maybe the unseen mother.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The Taurs spent the entire episode bullying the Puddlies and ransacking their village for fun. Mandale is ultimately defeated when Percemool's statue drop on him hammer-first, knocking him out cold.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Lampshaded by the Puddlies chief when Dally manages to break through the Taurs' energy beam attack... with the fragments of the attack damaging the village and nearly wounding his friends as they recoil.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Once the Puddlies overcome their fear of Taurs, they manage to drive them back easily.
  • Shockwave Stomp: Beyond the energy blasts coming from their horns, the Taurs also attack by stomping or punching the ground, causing dangerous tremors.
  • Too Important to Walk: The village's chief moves around on a platform carried by many young puddlies.
  • Training the Peaceful Villagers: Subverted; the training in itself does little, it's only after receiving encouragement that the Puddlies are able to actually put their powers to use and defeat the Taurs.
  • Troll: As Yugo and Mandale prepares to square off, the former asks for a break to drink some milk and belch after finishing it, much to Mandale's irritation.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: A band of wandering heroes decide to help a village besieged by bandits... Sound Familiar?
