Recap / Veep S 6 E 7 Veep

Go To

At the Party Convention, the nominating fight between Selina and her rivals reaches its climax as their race comes to a historic finish.

It's time for Veep's Grand Finale! The first vote of the 2020 Convention ends with no candidate reaching the required majority of delegates, so it becomes a brokered convention where every delegate is up for grabs. Selina rejects the idea of asking Kemi to be her running mate and instead starts wheeling-and-dealing with Jonah and Buddy.

This episode contains examples of:

  • All Elections Are Serious Business: Justified. Even though this is only the nomination race, Selina's deal with President Lu to fix the 2020 election means that she is guaranteed to become president as long as she gets her party's nomination.
  • All for Nothing: Selina finally achieves her goal of being elected president by sacrificing her remaining political convictions and her one truly positive legacy of freeing Tibet, but she is ultimately nothing more than a historical footnote who is overshadowed by her more successful and beloved successors.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Catherine gleefully celebrates her mother's funeral with margaritas as she watches it on television with Marjorie and Little Richard.
  • Back for the Finale:
    • In January 2021, Sue informs Vice President Ryan that the President does not want to see him.
    • Laura Montez and Andrew Doyle are among the guests seen at Selina's state funeral. (According to an official funeral program prop, Jaffar was also in attendance... however he is not seen on screen).
  • Big "NO!": As Selina feels the nomination slipping away from her.
Gary: Can I get you six almonds?
Selina: (screaming loudly enough to knock Gary off his chair) NO!!
  • Call-Back: Several to the show's first episode
    • Selina begins to say "The level of incompetence in this office is s—" before she peters out, realizing she is alone in the Oval Office.
    • The news coverage of Selina's state funeral is interrupted by a breaking story: Tom Hanks has died!
  • Distant Finale: The episode flashes forward to January 2021 (shortly after Selina is re-elected president) and then again to Selina's state funeral in August 2044.
  • Ending Memorial Service: The final scene of the episode is Selina's state funeral in August 2044.
  • Fall Guy: Selina uses Gary as the patsy to take the fall for the Meyer Fund's financial crimes.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The ailing Ben's advice that Selina knows exactly what she needs to do to win.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Selina crosses several, but the most significant is sacrificing Gary to take the fall for the Meyer Fund's crimes.
  • Next Sunday A.D.: Most of the episode takes place in July 2020 but was aired in May 2019.
    • It then flashes forward to January 2021 and then again to August 2044.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The reactions to Selina offering Jonah the VP slot.
    • Kent's response to Selina claiming the numbers show it's a good decision? "FUCK THE NUMBERS!"
    • Amy, who earlier in the episode had been cackling gleefully at Jonah possibly getting the nomination over Selina, can only say in a small voice "Don't do it."
    • Marjorie becomes visibly angry and raises her voice.
  • Talking to the Dead: Gary addresses Selina's casket, saying she would have hated the flower arrangements and that he brought the Dubonnet lipstick he was going to give her at the convention.
  • Tantrum Throwing: When Selina loses her patience at Amy and Kent begging her not to offer the VP slot to Jonah, she screams "ENOUGH!" and tosses a folding chair across the room.
