Danvers has trouble sleeping and decides to examine Annie Kowtok's video. The bodies are being transported to Anchorage and Ted Connolly is supervising. On her way to the rink, Danvers finds a half-dressed Julia wandering around and calls Navarro, who checks in her sister at the local mental health clinic and promised to visit daily.

Peter Prior has been digging for cases featuring injuries like those sustained by the scientists, and finds a file for one Otis Heiss, a German National. There is no employment history or address on record for Heiss, so an APB is put out on him. Nevermind that it is almost Christmas and everyone is already looking for Clark.

Next stop: the home of the geology teacher last seen in "Part 2", much to his wife's displeasure at seeing Danvers. Danvers and Navarro are under the impression that there are no ice caves (like the ones in Annie's video) near Ennis. But yes, there are. And who mapped them out? Otis Heiss.

Just before Danvers and Navarro can explore the caves, Danvers gets a call: Leah got caught vandalizing the offices of the mining operation. Danvers has to persuade Kate McKittrick out of pressing charges. Leah packs her bag and goes off to the Priors' home, despite Danvers pleading for her to stay home and have Christmas dinner. So Danvers throws away the turkey she planned to cook and gets drunk.

Navarro stops at Rose Aguineau and finds that the old lady has cooked a magnificent Christmas and is dressed up. Hidden depths are revealed: Aguineau used to be a college professor until one fine day she got sick of all the noise and moved to Alaska. Navarro goes home and finds Qavvik has left her a miniature tree and a present: a toothbrush!

Just before Navarro can sit and relax, a drunk Danvers calls her, having noticed a power outage in both Kowtok's video and the scientist last video. She proposes they go questioning Oliver Tagaq, but Navarro refuses to go anywhere with a boozed-up Danvers, so Danvers enlists Peter Prior. He and Navarro go to Tagaq's camp. His place is abandoned, but a rock with the spiral Arc Symbol is left. On the way back from the camp, the Coast Guard calls: they have found Julia's body. At some point after being checked in, the poor woman abandoned the facility and walked out into the frozen ocean. Navarro takes out her rage on the Lighthouse staff for letting Julia leave and then starts a fight with three men, one of them the guy she arrested in "Part 1". Then she goes to Qavvik, who is horrified at her bruised and battered state and the news of Julia's death.

The next morning, Navarro goes to the hungover Danvers's home to show her the stone with the spiral, except she lost it in the fight. The two hear from Peter Prior about a sighting of a man in a pink parka. They go look for Clark in the old dredges. While they search for him, they split up. Navarro has visions of a dead woman. Danvers finds the pink-parka man, who turns out to be Otis Heiss. He tells her Clark is hiding in the "night country" and "We’re all in the night country now." Danvers then looks for her partner. She finds Navarro sitting the floor, staring into space and bleeding from her ear.

Tropes present in this episode

  • Catfishing: What Hank Prior's Russian fiancée did to him. She doesn't show up when he goes to the airport to pick her up. Presumably "Irina" was only interested in scamming Hank for money.
  • Curse: Navarro is convinced that what affected her sister was a curse and is now after her. Danvers tells her she is too intelligent to believe that.
  • Fingore: Navarro dislocated her finger during fight. Qavvik distracts her by talking about their relationship then setting it.
  • I See Dead People: During a flashback to the Wheeler case, Danvers and Navarro are at his home. Navarro sees his dead girlfriend's body lying on the ground, and at the same time her ghost standing up and pointing at Navarro, mouth open as if screaming.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: After learning of her sister's death by suicide, Navarro sees Ace, the guy she arrested for domestic violence back in "Part 1". She starts beating him up even though he is with his friends and they fight her on. The tables turn and they give her a massive beatdown.
  • Suicide by Sea: Julia Navarro has checked herself in the Lighthouse for her mental health issues. After having a vision of her mother, she leaves the facility and walks to the frozen shore. She strips off her clothes, folds them and then she walks out into the frozen sea, where she falls through the ice and drowns.
  • Teeth Flying: After starting a fight and getting beat up, Navarro goes to Qavvik's. When checking her injuries, he notes that she lost a tooth.
  • Wham Line: From Otis Heiss to Danvers, when she finds him hiding in an old dredging machine:
"We’re all in the night country now."
