Recap / Transformers G 1 The God Gambit

Go To

The Decepticons scheme to conquer a race of primitive humanoids by exploiting their religious beliefs.

Tropes:

  • Aliens Speaking English: The Titans have no problem communicating with Cybertronians.
  • The Artifact: Astrotrain seems to have been a last-minute replacement for Megatron, presumably to market Astro's then-recent toy. This would explain most of the Out of Character moments found in the episode.
  • First Church of Mecha: Initially, the Titans worshipped a mechanical statue of the sky god, but Talaria destroyed it and revealed it to be a farce. However, the Autobots and Decepticons land short after, and Astrotrain decides to exploit their religious beliefs by posing as a god.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Talaria is the only one who doesn't seem as religious as the rest of her kind. Likely due to Jero using their god-fearing to rule them over.
  • God Guise: The Decepticons pose as gods to manipulate the Titans.
  • Human Sacrifice: Human Alien sacrifice, to be exact. Astrotrain orders Talaria to be sacrificed as a means to further intimidate the rest of the Titans.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: When Talaria is firing arrows at Jazz, she manages to miss him twice despite the fact that he's a relatively big target and standing in place.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Once Omega Supreme enters the battle, the Decepticon trio escape instead of fighting him; as Thrust quickly points out, none of them can hope to put so much as a dent in Omega Supreme. Astrotrain (who tried just that a few episodes earlier and despite getting in a few sneaky hits was quickly overpowered) doesn't try to argue the point.
  • More Expendable Than You: Optimus wants to go on the mission to rescue Cosmos, but the others convince him that they can't afford to lose him, and Jazz takes his place.
  • Out of Character: Neither Astrotrain or Starscream are in character, at least in regards to their relationship with each other. Astrotrain makes grandiose speeches and orders Starscream around with no fear of repercussions, and Starscream not only meekly submits to Astrotrain but actually seems afraid of him, despite outranking himnote .
  • Scam Religion: Jero uses his religion as an excuse for high taxes and for hoarding offerings for himself, complete with the mechanical statue of "the sky god" to intimidate people.
  • Unwanted False Faith: The Autobots do NOT like being worshipped as gods.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Jero disappears after the cave explodes and is never seen again.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: When the cave collapses, Astrotrain and the Decepticons make their escape. When Jero tries to get them take him with them, Astrotrain refuses and abandons him.
Jero: Lord Astrotrain! What about me?!
Astrotrain: Die, like the worm you are!
