Recap / Tracker S1E7 "Without a Trace"

Go To

Vic tells Mel that he is being forced to put the investigation into the disappearance of her boyfriend Rod Archer two years ago on the back burner. Seeing a picture of Rod and how upset Mel is, Cole transforms his physical appearance to that of Rod. Mel is initially upset but is then appreciative, especially since he still doesn't have a good control over his ability to shift appearances and doesn't know when he'll change back to Cole. She also accepts Cole's offer to look into the disappearance. Cole learns that Rod disappearance around the same time as his business partner was killed, presumably by Marco Sylvestri and his mobsters. He goes to confront Marco, only for the mobsters to try to kill him. He escapes and determines that Rod was meeting with someone in the park after going there with Mel. During his second encounter with the mobsters, he is snatched up by two federal agents, who admonish him for violating his witness protection cover. Cole learns that Rod's new name is Ross Halpern and that he has a wife and a daughter. Mel arrives and is devastated to learn that Rod has moved on. Spotting the mobsters, Cole realizes they know where Rod lives. He pretends to be one of the federal agents and tells Rod to get out of the house with his family. When Sylvestri and his men arrive to the house, they find Cole and Mel, who are pretending to be Rod and his wife. They take "Rod" to a pier and try to shoot him execution-style. Cole uses his hyperspeed to avoid the bullet and to steal Marco's expensive ring. Then he falls into the water, letting the mobsters think they killed him. He leaves the ring for Rod. Mel decides not to talk to Rod. Cole turns back into his old self.

  • Dirty Cop: Agent Craig Barlow sells out Rod to Marco Sylvestri for a reward.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Sylvestri's Number Two is visibly upset when breaking into Rod's home and seeing a baby crib, since he didn't agree to killing any children.
  • Faking the Dead: Cole uses his Super-Speed to let the mobsters think they killed Rod.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Averted. The mobsters leave Mel tied up but unharmed after killing "Rod".
  • The Lost Lenore: Mel has been wondering what happened to Rod for two years. She finally learns that he was placed in witness protection and has a wife and a baby now. While she's clearly upset, she decides to leave him to his happiness. At least she has closure now.
  • The Mafia: Marco Sylvestri is a Chicago mobster, who is after Rod for testifying against him in a federal case.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Zig-zagged. On the one hand, Cole walking into the mobsters' club while looking as Rod nearly got Rod killed. And on the other, there's no reason to think that Agent Barlow wasn't going to give him up anyway, so Cole's presence saved his life.
  • Voice Changeling: Cole fakes Agent Barlow's voice on the phone to get Rod out of the house.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Cole makes himself look like Rod to please Mel but has trouble controlling the shift, so he ends up staying looking like Rod for several days.
  • Witness Protection: It turns out that Rod agreed to testify against Marco Sylvestri for killing his business partner and was given a new identity by the feds. While there, he met and fell in love with Laura. Then Laura got pregnant and they got married.
