Recap / The New Adventures Of Superman S 1 E 5

Go To

The Robot of Riga: Looking for human specimens for their zoo, a group of aliens kidnap Lois and Jimmy.
The Deep Sea Dragon: A monster attacks a deep-sea diving team who find a huge pearl.
The Invisible Raiders: A group of thugs, led by the sinister Sorcerer, rob a museum exhibit while Clark and Jimmy are reporting on it, bringing Superman into the situation.

The Robot of Riga contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Attack the Mouth: Superman flies into the mouth of the Humongous Mecha to sabotage it from the inside.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: When Superman takes Lois and Jimmy back to Earth, he doesn't bother getting a ship to protect them from the cold vacuum of space. It doesn't harm them at all.
  • People Zoo: The Rigans kidnap Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane and put them in a cage on their homeworld Riga. They fail because their prisoners take their first chance to escape, and they have a very powerful guardian.
  • Ship Tease: At the end of the episode, Clark suggests that he and Lois take a break and get some fresh air. She flirtily asks if he's asking her on a drive through the country.
  • Trauma Button Ending: Lois and Jimmy are almost kidnapped to be put into a People Zoo. After Superman rescues them, Clark tries to talk Lois into taking an afternoon off for some air, suggesting he and she might take a trip to the zoo. Lois responds by throwing her purse at Clark.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: While their captors are pushing them towards their cell, Jimmy resists and Lois asks him not to cause trouble. Jimmy is incredulous, given their situation.

The Deep-Sea Dragon contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Monster Is a Mommy: A diver exploring a shipwreck finds a pearl in a chest. After he removes it and takes it to his ship on the surface, the ship is attacked by a seagoing dragon. It turns out that the dragon was genetically engineered, and she left her egg in the wreck for safe keeping.

The Invisible Raiders includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Defiant Captive: Jimmy attempts to punch the thugs kidnapping him. Even after being kidnapped, he doesn't show any fear towards the Sorcerer and uses the first time he's alone to reach his signal watch and alert Superman, despite the Sorcerer having threatened to kill him if the Man of Steel followed them.
  • I Have Your Wife: The Sorcerer has his men kidnap Jimmy to manipulate Superman. This seems to have been their entire plan to keep Supes at bay, given that the Sorcerer tells his rebellious captive that he can manage as long as he has Jimmy prisoner. He fails to consider that the Man of Steel might still look for them.
  • Invisible Monster: The Sorcerer can turn his minions invisible at will.
  • Just Whistle: The Sorcerer doesn't notice (or maybe know about) the signal watch, so he doesn't take it. When the kidnappers leave him in a cavern, Jimmy presses the button, giving Superman a lead.
  • Never Say "Die": The Sorcerer tells Superman not to trail them "or you will never see the boy [Jimmy] alive again."
