Recap / The Lion Guard S 3 E 12 The River Of Patience

Go To

While Kion heals at the Tree of Life, villains attack; Kion is eager to defend the Tree but must learn to focus and find patience in order to heal fully.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Apology Gift: Rani never straight up apologizes to the Lion Guard for misjudging them. However, her thanking them for defending her brother and allowing them to stay at the Tree of Life make it clear that she wants to make amends with them.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Rani repeatedly refuses to let the Lion Guard help the Night Pride with their patrols after finding out they had led a group of invaders into their home. It's only after she actually witnesses them fend off Makucha's gang and protect Baliyo after he is incapacitated that she finally accepts them for real.
  • Internal Reveal: The Lion Guard are finally aware that Makucha and his new partners are after them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Rani was already distrustful of the Lion Guard due to the events of the previous episode, but when she finds out that they had (albeit unknowingly) led Makucha and his gang into her home, she is livid and the only reason she doesn't kick them out is due to Queen Janna keeping her in line. However...
    • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Makucha attacking the Tree in broad daylight is what makes the Night Pride realize the Lion Guard were truly innocent all along and finally accept their help.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Kion's attempts at proving himself to the Night Pride initially backfire; he crashes into Rani the first time they try to help fight off the bad guys, and then later admits to having been followed by them. Had it not been for Queen Janna reining in her granddaughter's temper and Makucha launching an attack in the middle of the day, the Lion Guard would've been permanently banned from the Tree of Life.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Rani asks if Kion is healed yet, Nirmala jokes that she's acting just like him.
  • Patience Plot: One of the steps of Kion's healing process is to learn patience by jumping onto a moving log on the river in order to get to a flower on top of a cliff.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Queen Janna once again. Upon finding out that the villains had followed the Lion Guard to the Tree of Life, she doesn't hold it against them, and when Rani once again tries to kick them out, she gently overturns her granddaughter's decision and reminds Kion to focus on his healing.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Ora decides to cut his losses when Kion shows up to help the Night Pride after obtaining the special flower.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Kion manages to get the flower from the cliff, but it ends up being trampled in a fight with the antagonists. However, Nirmala reveals that giving her the flower wasn't the point of the task, merely to teach Kion to focus and be patient.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By the end of the episode, the Night Pride (especially Rani) finally and fully accept the Lion Guard after seeing them fend off the villains.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Initially, when Kion tries to help the Night Pride the first time, Rani tells him that defending the Tree is [their] job and that they're good at it, before rudely telling him to focus on getting healed so he can go back home. She gets better, though.
  • Unwanted Assistance: At first. Due to what happened in the last episode, Rani refuses Kion's help due to wanting him healed so he can go home, but after he protects an injured Baliyo during a fight, she changes her mind and later thanks the Guard for their help.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Kion admitting to knowing about Machuka further worsens Rani's opinion of him, when he could have easily feigned ignorance. It likely would have backfired anyway, given that Rani would be smart enough to eventually figure it out, and thus she'd more upset with him for lying to her.
